About Me

My name is Michael Morris, I am a photographer who came to photography later in life.  I started with digital and found it unrewarding so after a short time with MF, I moved to LF 4X5.  Almost everything I do now is large format B&W.  I am working to improve my technical and artistic skills constantly.  Living in Phoenix, I have access to some very good photographers who are willing to help and teach.  I am on a journey exploring photography, the US, and myself to some extent.  Along with my wife Mary, we are traveling the US together, cameras follow us everywhere and as we travel, this BLOG is updated.  It is very much a journal of my journey with ramblings about everything from the photograph I took while traveling, to the ah-ha moments when something new is grasped.

The old masters work is enthralling to me and I spend a lot of time looking at their work as well as most other work I have access to.

Last Day in Fort Bragg

This was our last day in Fort Bragg.  I thought this would be the least interesting stop on our way, in hindsight staying 3 nights was a good choice.  We have done everything we wanted to do except the redwoods.  Tomorrow we head to Eureka.  Some information we received today indicates we might wish to go on up to Crescent City instead.

The focus of the day today was the Point Arena Lighthouse.  It was nice that we spent time talking to one of the people there and learned a lot but was a bit of a disappointment because  they removed the lamp and lens last fall.  But they have the lens on display in the museum.  The photo above is of the lens.  I also worked it a bit with the 4X5.

We stopped in a couple of areas on  the way back.  One was the Point Cabrillo Light Station.  It was a bit stormy and the light was low enough I hope to find some nice dramatic photos in the bunch.

Travel Again

We are preparing for another trip, this time to the Northern California coast.  We have wanted to do this trip since the New Years trip of '07/'08.  We do not leave until tomorrow afternoon but will be spending the time until then preparing for the trip.  As usual, posts will be inconsistent depending on the day to day circumstances but I will post as much as practical.

The first stop is Bodega Bay.  Using it as a base camp for several days.  From there we plan to spend a day around San Francisco, a day in wine country, and a couple of days on the coast near Bodega Bay, depending on how crowded it is.  Then we will head up the coast for a few hours and find the next place to stop.  Normally we have firm plans of where to go and stay.  This time is different, we have no firm plans or schedule other than the return date.  It could be interesting and exciting, and it could be frustrating.

On the way home we plan to stop by Bodie and possibly Mono Lake, Tahoe, and the Eastern Sierras but that is all dependent on when we start back toward home.  All in all it should be a very interesting trip.
