About Me

My name is Michael Morris, I am a photographer who came to photography later in life.  I started with digital and found it unrewarding so after a short time with MF, I moved to LF 4X5.  Almost everything I do now is large format B&W.  I am working to improve my technical and artistic skills constantly.  Living in Phoenix, I have access to some very good photographers who are willing to help and teach.  I am on a journey exploring photography, the US, and myself to some extent.  Along with my wife Mary, we are traveling the US together, cameras follow us everywhere and as we travel, this BLOG is updated.  It is very much a journal of my journey with ramblings about everything from the photograph I took while traveling, to the ah-ha moments when something new is grasped.

The old masters work is enthralling to me and I spend a lot of time looking at their work as well as most other work I have access to.

Renewed Energy

As many times as I have been to ghost towns, there is none quite like Vulture.  There is enough there to find something new every time and to keep my interest.  Bodie was interesting but it is too crowded, Vulture on the other hand is not crowded, you may only see a few people throughout the day.  That makes it ideal for shooting large format because you can take your time, go at whatever pace you wish, wander around and shoot as you like.  It is a great place to shoot.

There are a couple of holes in the chicken wire in the assay office that are large enough to shoot through.  I made a couple of negatives in there.  This one I like a lot, the other one it seems I had forgotten to level the camera and when straightened it was not so good. 

I did some preliminary prints of 4 negatives yesterday.  A couple may be the final prints, I need to sit down and look at them closely now.  The 2 from yesterday were printed, neither for today.

I find it fascinating that one week things were hard to find, the next week I was making choices between multiple good shots.  No clue what was different but it was certainly nice to be in the zone again.

A Couple of Photos From Gold King

Last trip to Gold King I did B&W and color of a couple of the compositions.  I knew they would work as B&W and suspected they would make nice color photos as well so I gave it a try.  This one is nice either way and I can not say I prefer the color or B&W.

This one I prefer the color image.  The B&W is nice but the subtle colorations make for a bit more interesting photograph.

Blacksmith Shop

Yesterdays post included a photo from the trip to Gold King on Sunday.  We had a conversation about that photo last night at the meetup and I though it might be interesting to some of the readers to see how that came about and where it went from there.

 Usually when I make a negative there is a clear vision in my head of what that will look like on paper.  The scans rarely look like the final vision but the silver print is usually close.  But sometimes, it just doesn't quite work out to be that simple.  This is one of those that just didn't quite work out but IMO is better than the original vision.

The blacksmith shop at Gold King faces East and gets nice full sun in the morning.  When we arrived I wanted to talk to the blacksmith but he was not there, however, the sun was there and was lighting the anvil but not the interior of the shop.  The original photo included a larger portion of the shop than was shown in the photo yesterday.

 

That is the un-adjusted photo as shot.  I typically do try to make negatives that can be printed in many different ways.  That allows some exploration in printing that sometimes yields some very interesting prints.  So, the original concept was to include the larger view but to darken all but the anvil to create feeling of loneliness or solitude.  That attempt is here.

 

I like this but 2 things are just not gonna work.  The white and shiny things in the background would require too much burning to be practical and I felt the composition was simply not as strong as I thought it would be. So:

Cropping the full scene down to make the anvil much more prominent made the composition much stronger and I could see the original feeling I got from the scene coming through clearly here, but not wuite enough yet.

This is a close approximation of the final silver print that was made yesterday.  The background printed as about Zone 2 1/2, more detail than just texture, but not full detail.  The anvil considerable ( 2 - 3 zones) lighter to make it very prominent and to emphasize the fact that it is idle.  I am quite pleased with it but will probably try a couple more things today to hopefully improve it.  

Once it was printed I worked through several names, several had 3 words, but I wanted a simple but strong name for the photo, that became "Silence".  Thus a new print that I will show is born.

Generator

The generator building at Vulture Mine is usually the last stop on the tour.  There are some metal-working tools, like an old lathe, a good sides internal combustion engine, some workbenches, electrical boxes and of course the generator.  I am usually almost out of film by the time I get there so usually make  or 2 negatives there.  But there is a whole world of potential in that building.  I could probably go straight there then leave after exposing all the film I brought.

The light is low so the exposures are usually long.  I carry TMax 100 and 400 for those cases where there is a longer exposure required.  I tend to use the 400 when the metered time is between 2 and 20 seconds.

I hope to return there again this season before it gets unbearably hot.

Pipes

Still at Vulture Mine, in a shed near the ball mill building are stacks of these pipes and a couple of tanks.  The order of the pipes amongst the chaos of the collapsing building struck me as being a strong image.  But as usual, I am very much looking forward to printing the negative.  Should be a fun one to print.
