About Me

My name is Michael Morris, I am a photographer who came to photography later in life.  I started with digital and found it unrewarding so after a short time with MF, I moved to LF 4X5.  Almost everything I do now is large format B&W.  I am working to improve my technical and artistic skills constantly.  Living in Phoenix, I have access to some very good photographers who are willing to help and teach.  I am on a journey exploring photography, the US, and myself to some extent.  Along with my wife Mary, we are traveling the US together, cameras follow us everywhere and as we travel, this BLOG is updated.  It is very much a journal of my journey with ramblings about everything from the photograph I took while traveling, to the ah-ha moments when something new is grasped.

The old masters work is enthralling to me and I spend a lot of time looking at their work as well as most other work I have access to.

What's Happening

It's been a while since the last post and a lot has happened.  The treatment made me very ill for a while but my body is growing accustomed to it now and I am feeling much better.  Still on restricted duty and must stay out of the sun, but not sill now.  The first milestone of the treatment was reached and the progress was measured.  This was a test that had 3 possible outcomes, a very good possibility of a sustained response, little chance, or not a significant result.  Unfortunately, my results fell into the 3rd category.  We will be repeating the treatment again in 3 weeks.  At that time, the range of not significant results will be much more narrow and we may choose to stop the treatment at that time if the odds for a sustained result are around 1 in 3 or less.  If the results are not significant, we will continue for another month and make the final determination at that time.

The photo above was accepted for an exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Ft. Collins, CO from August 28 to September 16.  We are going to try to attend the artist reception.  This is the first time any of my work has been accepted for an exhibition and it is very exciting.  I submit work from time to time but have not been selected before.

Our discussion group has grown to a point that it was no longer a discussion group but was becoming a photography class.  Some of the new members wished to take advantage of this and have the leaders basically work for free.  Most of you know how much I hate it when someone asks me to work for free.  Of course, like everyone, I have some friends for whom I would do just about anything and would never consider accepting money for it. We imposed some guidelines and some of the new members are very upset.  But the bottom line is, we hope to have smaller meetings now and to be able to get back to our original focus, a discussion group.  The meeting coming up will be a discussion of how people do composition.  I think it will be an interesting subject.  Giving it some more thought, I wish to have meetings on several different topics, favorite photographer, favorite book, favorite type of photography, how people work to improve their skill, both technically and creatively. I think these will be good topics that will be interesting to people of all skill levels.  I hope to engage most of the group with these topics.

I appreciate your continue visits to this site while I am trying to find my voice again.  I hope to begin posting more often but probably not daily again yet.
