About Me

My name is Michael Morris, I am a photographer who came to photography later in life.  I started with digital and found it unrewarding so after a short time with MF, I moved to LF 4X5.  Almost everything I do now is large format B&W.  I am working to improve my technical and artistic skills constantly.  Living in Phoenix, I have access to some very good photographers who are willing to help and teach.  I am on a journey exploring photography, the US, and myself to some extent.  Along with my wife Mary, we are traveling the US together, cameras follow us everywhere and as we travel, this BLOG is updated.  It is very much a journal of my journey with ramblings about everything from the photograph I took while traveling, to the ah-ha moments when something new is grasped.

The old masters work is enthralling to me and I spend a lot of time looking at their work as well as most other work I have access to.

Redwoods

Yesterday we drove some back roads, went to some interesting beaches and drove through some redwood groves.  It was interesting, even after having driven through Sequoia NP the redwoods are impressive.  It is dark and ominous in the midst of the forest, one could easily get lost and totally lose all sense of direction.

I played with the digital a bit and used the fish-eye lens just for fun, also did a little 4X5.  I now have over 50 sheets of exposed B&W film.  Much more B&W than color.  Last year our trip to Rocky Mountain NP I took over 100 color photos with the 4X5 but mostly digital.  This year mostly B&W 4X5.  Some color 4X5, some 35mm (B&W and color about equal), and some digital.  Interesting how things have changed.

Today we spend in and around Eureka, deal with batteries, shoot downtown, marina, harbor, look for the dolphins again, and get ready to move on North in the morning.

You probably know of two spots that come to mind for photos, but I think Stout Grove and afern glade along Boy Scout Tree trail are two excellent locations.

Was at the latter three weeks ago.

I do not know those spots you mentioned. Perhaps someday I will be able to return to the area and visit them.
