About Me

My name is Michael Morris, I am a photographer who came to photography later in life.  I started with digital and found it unrewarding so after a short time with MF, I moved to LF 4X5.  Almost everything I do now is large format B&W.  I am working to improve my technical and artistic skills constantly.  Living in Phoenix, I have access to some very good photographers who are willing to help and teach.  I am on a journey exploring photography, the US, and myself to some extent.  Along with my wife Mary, we are traveling the US together, cameras follow us everywhere and as we travel, this BLOG is updated.  It is very much a journal of my journey with ramblings about everything from the photograph I took while traveling, to the ah-ha moments when something new is grasped.

The old masters work is enthralling to me and I spend a lot of time looking at their work as well as most other work I have access to.

Drive to Eureka

We drove from Fort Bragg to Eureka today.  Another harrowing drive up Hwy 1.  It was not too bad until it turned inland and started climbing the mountain.  It was steep and winding and much of the trip up the mountain was < 20mph.  It took about 5 hours to travel the 135 miles.  About 90 miles was on 101 and was at 55mph.

So far it has been a great trip.  We stopped on along the way and shot some foggy coastline with the 4X5.  I played with no filter, cooling filter (KB3) and yellow filter.  The light here is so much different than in AZ.  I think the moisture in the air and the higher latitude.

We went out to the harbor entrance this afternoon and saw a family of dolphins and some harbor seals.  We will be spending one day around town shooting the victorian houses, the public marina, downtown, and back out to try to find the dolphins again.

The power converter finally took out the last battery.  We will be purchasing a new pair along with a charger so whenever we are connected to shore power the batteries will be disconnected.

We will be here for 3 nights then pull out for Bodie.
